Some Thoughts on Tonight’s Debate

First, I won’t be liveblogging like I tried last time.  I tried it, and did not like it — I don’t think the liveblog added much if anything, and it mainly just distracted me from paying closer attention to the debate.  So no more of that.

Second, depending on how much time I have (and how truthful, or not, the candidates are tonight) I will likely try to catalog the mistakes and lies from this debate the way I did with Biden’s in the VP debate.  Covering Obama’s will be the first order of business, but if I do it at all I will probably try to do McCain’s as well.  I mentioned in the VP debate article that I did not try to be fair and balanced, just fair — this time I will try for both.

Third, and last, in my opinion tongiht’s debate will not be a game changer.  It favors McCain in that he prefers the townhall format, but do not discount the fact that the audience members, who are supposed to be undecided voters, will likely tend to slant toward the left and may include outright Obama supporters.  That’s just me being a cynic, though, so Obama may get some tough questions as well.

As much as I would like to see Obama’s brain freeze and um and ah for five minutes straight, and/or say something completely asinine, I don’t expect it.  What I expect is for both candidates to do well, leaving the pundits to hash out who actually won.  The undecided voters will probably vote on style points, which is tough to predict but will likely favor Obama — McCain is more comfortable with the format and speaking off the cuff, but Obama will be well rehearsed and naturally comes across as competent and confident.

Also, don’t expect to see McCain go on the offensive tonight, at least not without a question from the audience that leads to it, and maybe not then.  Political junkies may want to see a cage match, but going negative in that environment would be too personal and would likely put off more voters than it impressed.  Depending on the state of the polls and such for the next debate, I think you may see it then.  But it’s just too risky in a townhall, interacting with voters themselves.
